BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN - THE Ministry of Communications (MinComm) yesterday hosted the opening ceremony for the four-day TechXpo 2015, which features products from key local and foreign players in the electrical appliance and technology industries.

Former minister of MinComm Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Abdullah Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar was present as the guest of honour at the ceremony, which took place at the International Convention Centre in Berakas.

He also toured the booths and spoke to government officials and vendors from private companies about the technological developments being showcased at the exhibition.

At the exhibition, which ends on Sunday, the public can view more than 150 booths of government and private-sector companies featuring their latest products and services, ranging from security surveillance systems to awareness programmes aimed at educating the public about cybercrime.

InfoCom Federation Brunei (IFB) Chairman Sheikh Hj Abas Sheikh Mohammad said in his opening speech that the exhibition was in its fourth edition.

“TechXpo is a premier technological expo in Brunei and provides the perfect platform for the public to learn about technological trends, developments, products and services across the globe,” he said.

Sheikh Hj Abas said the exhibition also offers exhibitors and visitors an important venue for doing business and building networks.

Hj Mas Zuraime, head of the Brunei Emergency Response Team (BruCERT), told The Brunei Times that the exhibition is a great opportunity for the private company to raise awareness about social media security.

“I hope more people will visit the booth. We want to educate members of the public about how to protect their identity when using social media. We want to know whether people have strong passwords for their Facebook accounts or other social media,” he said.

IT Protective Security Services (ITPSS) is the parent company of BruCERT. Speaking at her department’s booth, Siti Nur Musfirah Hj Mustafa, an aeronautical telecommunication engineer at the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA), said that through the exhibition, the department hoped to remind the public about the ‘iFlyBrunei’ app for Android and iPhone users launched last December.

“As of this month, there have been 1,613 downloads of the app. This shows that locals are interested in using services offered by the government. The app provides frequent travelers with real-time information such as arrival and departure times at Brunei International Airport,” she said.

Adrian Deleon, an electrical technician at CFK Automation Sdn Bhd, said the exhibition hoped to attract more Bruneians to install closed-circuit televisions (CCTVs) in residential areas due to the growing trend of thefts recently.

“Although most of our clients are corporate, we also have customers from Kg Masin,” he said. TechXpo 2015 is being held at the ICC’s Plenary Hall and is open daily from 10am to 10pm.
